Al has been blessed to be married to his best friend, Cathy, for over 42 years. They met on registration day of their freshman year of college and have been smitten with each other since that day. They have 3 married daughters who live in GA and SC, and their son, Chris, who will be a junior at UNC Charlotte in January. They have 7 grandchildren and can prove it with the pictures. They are avid fans of the Georgia Bulldogs and Atlanta Braves. Their favorite local college team is NC State and they pull for the Panthers.
Al graduated from Brewton-Parker College and from Blue Mountain College. He earned his MDiv and ThD from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He started serving as a pastor at the age of 18 and has served churches in GA, MS, LA, and NC. Al and Cathy were missionaries with the IMB for 10 years before he joined the Faculty at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2002. He serves as the Associate Dean for Ministry Studies, Coordinator of the EQUIP Network, and Professor of Missions at SEBTS.
Al’s life verse is Ps. 55:22: Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you because it reminds him that everything is dependent upon the Lord and his mercies and strength rather than Al’s abilities and strength. God is able to sustain us through all situations of life.
